Hydroseeding Contractor

Bare ground does not stay bare. Whatever grows there first is usually not grass.

Hydroseeding puts down seed, mulch, fertilizer and a tackifier in one slurry sprayed over the soil. It establishes faster than hand seeding, costs less than sod, and holds on slopes where loose seed washes away in the first rain.

When Hydroseeding Is the Right Call

After grading or excavation. Any job that leaves bare soil needs cover before the next hard rain moves it.

New construction. Full lawn establishment on a lot with no turf at all.

Slopes and ditches. This is where hydroseeding separates from everything else. The mulch and tackifier hold the seed in place while it germinates instead of letting it run downhill.

Repairing large thin or dead areas. Faster and far cheaper than sodding the whole yard.

After drainage or wall work. We hydroseed our own disturbed ground so the job is finished, not just functional.

Hydroseeding vs Sod vs Hand Seeding

Hand seeding is cheapest and least reliable. Seed sits exposed, birds take some, rain moves the rest, and germination is uneven. Fine for patching a small flat area, poor for anything that matters.

Sod is instant and the most expensive by a wide margin. It is the right answer when you need a finished lawn now, or on a small high-visibility area.

Hydroseeding sits between them and beats both on cost per square foot for large areas. You wait a few weeks for a lawn instead of getting it the same day, but the root system establishes in place rather than knitting down from a transplanted mat, and on slopes it simply works where the other two do not.

For most of the yards we see, hydroseeding is the right tradeoff.

What the Process Looks Like

Soil prep first. Grading, breaking up compaction, removing debris. Slurry sprayed over hardpan does not grow grass. This step is most of the job.

Amendments if the soil needs them. Heavy clay often does.

The spray. Seed, mulch, fertilizer and tackifier mixed and applied in an even coat. The green color is dye in the mulch so we can see our coverage.

Watering. This part is yours and it decides the outcome. We walk you through the schedule before we leave.

Seed Mix Matters in Minnesota

Sun, shade, traffic and soil all change what should go down. A shaded north-facing yard under mature oaks needs a different mix than an open south-facing slope. We select for the conditions on your property rather than spraying one blend everywhere.

Hydroseeding Questions We Get

How long until I see grass?2026-10-15T09:55:33+00:00

Germination usually starts within one to two weeks in good conditions. A usable lawn takes longer. Full establishment runs a season.

When is the best time to hydroseed in Minnesota?2026-10-15T09:56:38+00:00

Spring and late summer into early fall are both good. Fall gets cool nights, warm soil and less weed pressure, which is why a lot of our hydroseeding happens then. Mid-summer works with diligent watering.

How much do I have to water?2026-10-15T09:56:44+00:00

Light and frequent at first, keeping the surface damp without washing it out. Then less often and deeper as roots establish. Letting it dry out during germination is the one mistake that ruins a hydroseed job.

Can you hydroseed a steep slope?2026-10-15T09:57:02+00:00

Yes, and that is one of the best uses for it. On very steep ground we may recommend adding erosion blanket over the top.

Will weeds come up too?2026-10-15T09:57:21+00:00

Some will. Weed seed is already in the soil. A thick stand of grass crowds most of it out, and the rest is handled with normal maintenance once the lawn is established.
