Before starting a retaining wall project, a few things are worth understanding upfront.

First, a retaining wall is often solving a structural problem, not just a cosmetic one. Signs like recurring erosion, cracks near a slope, standing water, or an unusable steep grade usually mean soil is shifting or drainage is failing, and the wall needs to address the cause, not just hold back dirt.

Material choice matters more than it seems. Segmental block is the most common option for durability and consistency. Natural boulder walls give a more rustic look and suit taller grade changes. Timber is the cheapest upfront but tends to have the shortest lifespan, especially anywhere winters bring repeated freeze-thaw cycles. The right choice depends on the slope, budget, and how long the wall needs to last.

What’s underground matters more than what’s visible. A wall’s long-term success depends on proper base preparation (a footing that can handle ground movement through freeze-thaw), backfill, and drainage, usually gravel and perforated drain tile behind the wall to relieve water pressure. Walls that fail early almost always skipped this step, not the visible materials.

Height affects permitting. In most jurisdictions, walls under 4 feet don’t require a permit, while taller walls typically need a permit and an engineered plan. Requirements vary by city and county, so confirm locally before committing to a design.

Finally, drainage and retaining walls are often the same problem viewed from two angles; a failing slope and a flooding yard frequently share a root cause. It’s worth having both evaluated together rather than treating them as separate projects, since a wall built without a drainage plan is one of the more common reasons walls fail within a few years.
