Signs Your Wall Is Failing
Walls rarely come down all at once. They tell you first.
- Bulging or bowing in the middle of the run, where soil pressure is winning
- Leaning away from the slope, even slightly
- Cracking or separating between blocks, especially at the ends
- Soil washing out from behind or underneath after heavy rain
- Standing water pooling at the base that was not there before
- Blocks shifting out of line from one season to the next
If you are seeing any of these, the wall is not going to recover on its own. The question is whether it gets repaired now or replaced after it comes down and takes the slope with it.
Why Retaining Walls Fail in Minnesota
Almost every failed wall we are called out to has the same two problems: water and frost.
Water is the real load. Soil holds water, and saturated soil behind a wall weighs far more than dry soil. A wall built without drainage behind it is holding back something much heavier than the contractor planned for. Our walls get drain rock, filter fabric and a drain line so water has somewhere to go besides into the backfill.
Frost moves everything. Minnesota ground freezes deep and lifts as it does. A wall sitting on shallow or poorly compacted base gets pushed up and out a little more every winter until it is out of line. The base is the part nobody sees and the part that decides whether a wall lasts five years or thirty.
Heavy clay through most of this area makes both problems worse, because clay holds water instead of draining it.
What We Build
Segmental block walls. Engineered block in a range of colors and textures. Good for clean lines, terracing, and walls that need to tie into a patio or steps. Most residential walls fall here.
Boulder and natural stone walls. Heavier look, works well on larger properties and natural slopes, and handles height without the formality of block.
Terraced walls. Two or more shorter walls stepped up a slope instead of one tall one. Often better looking, often cheaper, and usually the right answer on a steep grade.
Repair and rebuild. Not every failing wall needs to be torn out. We will tell you honestly which one you are looking at.
We also build steps, seat walls and fire pit surrounds into wall projects, and tie walls into paver patios when the two jobs belong together.
How We Build a Wall That Lasts
- Excavate and compact the base. Deeper than most people expect. This is where walls are won or lost.
- Set the first course level. Every block above it depends on this one.
- Backfill with drain rock, not soil. Water needs a path.
- Install drain tile behind the wall and daylight it so water actually leaves.
- Build up with proper setback so the wall leans into the slope rather than away from it.
- Cap and finish, then grade the ground above so surface water runs away from the wall instead of over it.
